I called my boss this week and was only able to leave a message, but I received word that, as I suspected, the extra payment was a clerical error. Within a few hours, HR had contacted me and asked for my permission to create a bank draft to withdraw the overpayment from my account. I expect that everything will be sorted out by Friday.
One surprising fact surrounding all of this was that not a single person involved in correcting this (3 total so far) ever commented on the fact that I voluntarily asked to return the money. Not a single thank you or acknowledgment of honest and ethical behavior.
Although I am not the type of person who always expect thanks for just doing what is right, it would have been nice if someone actually said "Thank you." Am I off base about this?
